What is Biofeedback?

By Ellen Chernoff Simon, M.Ed., M.S., LPC, BCB · Frisco, Texas

What is biofeedback? It’s a mind-body technique that uses gentle sensors to show you, in real time, what your body is doing, such as your breathing, heart rate, muscle tension, skin temperature and sweat response. Seeing those signals lets you learn to change them, so you can calm your body’s stress response on purpose.

How biofeedback works

Much of your stress response runs on autopilot. Your breathing gets shallow, your shoulders tighten and your hands get cold, often without you noticing.

Biofeedback makes those hidden changes visible. Sensors pick up a signal, and a screen or sound shows it to you moment by moment. As you practice a skill like slow breathing or relaxing a muscle, you watch the signal respond.

It works a bit like a mirror for your nervous system. With practice, the skills become second nature, and you no longer need the equipment to use them.

Types of biofeedback

  • Heart rate variability (HRV): paced breathing that helps balance your nervous system and build resilience to stress.
  • Breathing (respiration): retrains fast, shallow breathing into slow, steady breaths.
  • Muscle tension (surface EMG): helps you notice and release tension in places like the jaw, neck and shoulders.
  • Skin temperature (thermal): hand-warming practice, often used for stress and headaches.
  • Skin conductance (EDA, sometimes called GSR): shows your stress response as it rises and falls.
  • Brainwaves (EEG): known as neurofeedback. Learn more about neurofeedback in Dallas.

What happens in a biofeedback session?

  1. Sensors are placed. Small sensors rest on your fingers or skin, or a soft band goes around your chest. There are no needles, and nothing is sent into your body.
  2. You see your baseline. Your therapist shows how your body responds at rest and under mild stress.
  3. You practice with coaching. You try breathing, relaxation and imagery skills while watching your signals change in real time.
  4. You take it home. You leave with simple practices to use in daily life, and you review your progress together over time.

What can biofeedback help with?

People often use biofeedback for:

  • Stress and anxiety
  • Tension headaches and migraines
  • Chronic pain, including jaw and muscle tension
  • High blood pressure, alongside medical care
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Panic and stress-related physical symptoms

Biofeedback complements medical care. It does not replace it, and results vary from person to person.

“

I was led to a biofeedback session with Ellen by my neurologist when I was suffering from chronic migraines almost daily in 2005. During these great sessions, that I now regard as invaluable, I gained a number of powerful tools from breathing techniques to visualization that did make an impact on the number of headaches I suffered.
